The government asked the Evaly authority to stop selling its different digital items, including gift card, voucher, wallet, cash voucher, etc. Otherwise, stern legal action would be taken against the crisis-ridden e-commerce platform, sources said.
The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) issued an order to the company on Tuesday to follow the existing policy properly and discontinue the sale.
The entity is selling various types of gift card, gift voucher, wallet, cash voucher, etc, at 24-59 per cent discount through its verified facebook page, a source said.
Issuance, use, sale and purchase of such things without prior approval of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) are prohibited as per its existing policy, he added.
The MoC order asked the Evaly authority to display the BB approval, if any, on its facebook page and other relevant places.
Otherwise, the firm has to stop selling all kinds of digital products, as these may be used alternatively as money.
The MoC also asked the firm to follow the Digital Commerce Operation Guidelines 2021 and other necessary laws for continuing operations to avoid facing legal actions from the government.
The reporter could not contact the Evaly authority for taking comments despite efforts.
The platform resumed its operation on October 28 following an order of the High Court.
A new five-member board of directors was also formed to run the company. The new board included former chairman of Evaly Shamima Nasrin, Shamima's mother Farida Talukder Lily, and her sister's husband Md Mamunur Rashid.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested Evaly chief Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin on Sept 16 last year in a case filed by a customer. They were placed on remand for questioning.
Shamima was released eight months later on April 8 after being granted bail in all the cases against her. Rassel was also granted bail in nine cases.
