Gazipur becoming Chinese smartphone city

Bangladesh's Gazipur is dubbed the Chinese smartphone city in the country.

Located on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, it is also famous for its textile manufacturing industry.

Today, Gazipur gathers many local and foreign companies including leading Chinese manufacturers such as Transsion and Xiaomi, employing thousands of workers, reports Xinhua.

Transsion started its journey in Bangladesh in 2017.

As a large player in the smartphone market in Bangladesh, it owns three mobile phone brands -- itel, TECNO and Infinix.

The mobile phone manufacturer also opened an assembly plant in Gazipur, with an over 1,000-strong workforce, mostly women.

Currently, Transsion has six production lines with an annual capacity of more than 5.0 million smartphones in the 6,500 square meter plant in Gazipur.

With a growing business, it has built a new factory in Narayanganj near Dhaka.

The new plant is expected to be ready for operation by the end of 2022 and will provide 2,500 local jobs.
