Gas crisis halts production at Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory

Production at Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory in Fenchuganj of Sylhet district was suspended 40 days back following a critical gas crisis.

The newly-built factory is incurring a loss of Tk 5.0 million a day due to the suspension, reports UNB.

Officials concerned said they have no clue when the production will resume in the factory.

They said the it stopped on April 23 due to inadequate supply of gas.

The factory produces some 1,450 metric tonnes of fertiliser a day against its daily production capacity of 1,760 metric tonnes.

Moinul Islam, executive engineer of the factory, said Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) asked them to halt the production following the gas crisis.

"We aren't getting adequate gas supply from Jalalabad Gas. As a result, the production was suspended on April 23. There is a possibility of resuming the production after Eid when the demand for gas may decline," he said.
