Garment wage hike proposal submission in three months: Minister

The wage board for garment sector will submit its proposal recommending the wage hike for the workers to the government by next three months, state minister for labour Mujibul Haque has said.

“The government will fix the minimum monthly wages for the garment sector taking all the situations into consideration,” he said adding the wage was increased by 223 per cent in 2013.

The minister said this at a programme where he handed over insurance claim checks to a total of 429 families of workers who died in knitwear factories in the past three years.

Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) organised the event at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the capital on Saturday.

A total of Tk 85.8 million have been handed over to the families of dead workers while 207 claims were made from the Central Fund on RMG sector, 70 from Jibon Bima Corporation and the rest from Padma Life Insurance.

BKMEA president Salim Osman presided over the programme which was also attended by labour secretary Afroza Khan and BKMEA vice presidents Mansoor Ahmed and Fazlee Shamim Ahsan, among others.
