Food import in the first nine months of the current fiscal year reached to 8.40 million tonnes, according to the statistics released by the food ministry.
Of the total import 6.98 million tonnes of food was imported by the private sector while the government imported the rest.
During the period, country’s private sector imported 2.56 million tonnes of rice while the government imported 0.95 million tonnes of rice.
In the last fiscal, the government didn’t import any rice while private sector imported 0.13 million tonnes.
Import of wheat by the private sector stood at 4.42 million during the period under review while the government imported 0.46 million tonnes of wheat.
In the past fiscal year, government imported 0.39 tonnes of wheat while it was 5.29 million tonnes in the private sector.
