Fishing ban drives up fish prices

Summer vegetables get costlier

Prices of fish and some vegetables further increased last week much to the displeasure of consumers.

Onion prices, however, declined slightly, according to traders.

Prices of most varieties of fish, especially hilsa, shrimp, tengra, shoul, pabda, riverine rui and katla, showed a Tk 60-Tk 100 hike a kg or piece in a week.

Hilsa weighing 600-850 gramme (gm) was selling at Tk 400-Tk 750 apiece on the kitchen markets.

Big-sized hilsa (over 1,000 gm) sold at Tk 1,350-Tk 1,400 a kg in the city-a Tk 80 rise in a week.

Shrimp of different quality was traded at Tk 450-Tk 1,150 a kg, shoul at Tk 400-Tk 600, pabda Tk 500-Tk 1,050 a kg on Thursday.

Riverine rui was sold at Tk 400-Tk 550 a kg and katla at Tk 350-Tk 450 a kg on covered vans run by the state-run Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC).

Gausul Azam, a fish vendor at Rayer Bazar in Dhaka, said prices had increased significantly at the Mawa, Jatrabari and Showarighat wholesale markets in the last one and a half weeks.

Afzal Hossain Mridha, a Jatrabari-based trader, told the FE costs of riverine fish increased after the ban on fishing by the government in many sanctuaries under its hilsa-conservation programme.

He said prices of fish might increase further ahead of the Bangla New Year to be celebrated next month.

Prices of cauliflower and cabbage increased by Tk 5.0 apiece, with traders attributing the rise to the gradual decline in supply.

Prices of tomato, carrot and most kinds of leafy, however, showed a Tk 2.0-Tk 5.0 hike a kg or bunch last week.

Summer vegetables including snake gourds, bitter gourds, okra, and pointed gourds were much costlier and were selling between Tk 60 and Tk 100 a kg.

Prices of onion showed a Tk 5.0 decline a kg during the period as the local variety sold at Tk 45-Tk 50 and imported ones at Tk 35-Tk 45 a kg.

Sugar prices remained static maintaining the previous high range-Tk 60-Tk 62 a kg.
