Fines for breaking brick kiln laws in last fiscal increase slightly

Total fines imposed on brick kilns for breaking laws across the country in fiscal year (FY) 2017-18 witnessed a slight increase.

A total of Tk 20 million was fined against 324 brick kilns in 149 drives in the last fiscal while it was Tk 19 million imposed as fines on 279 brick fields in 116 drives in FY 2016-2017, according to the annual report of the Department of Environment (DoE).

In a report published by the DoE in August last, there were one-third of brick kilns - or 2,363 of 6,843 ones - in the country operating unlicensed, meaning that only 4,480 kilns had government approval.
