Bangladesh's farmers supplied two-thirds of their produced cereal crops including paddy, wheat and corn to the market for the consumption by all, according to a survey.

The survey conducted by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) showed that total retention of the crops produced by the farmers and their households was 35.42 per cent while the gross marketed volume was 64.58 per cent.

The BBS conducted the survey on "Gross marketed surplus of agricultural commodities 2019". The survey period was the fiscal year (FY) 2017-18.

The farmers produced 58.14 million tonnes of Aus, Aman and Boro paddy, wheat, maize, barley and cheena in the FY 2017-18.

Of the total production, they kept aside 20.59 million tonnes for their family use and supplied the remaining 37.55 million tonnes to the market, the survey said.

Besides, the farmers supplied 81.10 per cent of their total 0.38 million tonnes of pulses, 78.80 per cent of 1.02 million

tonnes of oil seed and 98.64 per cent of 1.66 million tonnes of fibre to the market in FY2018.

In addition, they marketed 70.01 per cent of their 12.89 million tonnes of vegetables, 77.19 per cent of 0.30 million tonnes of leafy vegetables, 86.28 per cent of 2.58 million tonnes of spice, 79.82 per cent of 4.78 million tonnes of fruits to the market.

According to the survey, the cereals were adding 66.42 per cent value of the total output to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) after intermediate consumption of 33.58 per cent.

Oilseeds had made a value addition of 73.33 per cent to the GDP after intermediate consumption of 26.66 per cent of the total output.

Similarly, pulses had also added 79.20 per cent of its total output to the country's GDP after an intermediate consumption of 20.80 per cent, the BBS findings showed.

The findings of the survey were revealed at a function in the city on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, project director of the survey Ziauddin Ahmaed said this type of survey had been done for the first time in Bangladesh which would help facilitate a quality GDP data generation.

"We have taken a plan to rebase our GDP calculation year to FY 2015-16 from the current base-year of FY 2005-06. The agricultural survey will facilitate job creation," he added.
