Staying almost static for nearly two weeks, egg prices witnessed a hike again last week by Tk 15-20 a dozen, raising woes of the consumers further.
A dozen of brown farm egg sold at Tk 135-140 on Friday and Saturday, according to groceries.
White farm egg also became costlier as sold at Tk 132-135 from Tk 115-118 a dozen.
Duck egg, Sonali and Pakistani chicken eggs too registered a rise as retailed at Tk 180-200 a dozen while indigenous chicken egg at Tk 215-220, said kitchen market sources.
Julhas Uddin, a grocer across Mohammadpur's Sher-e-Bangla Road, said wholesalers raised brown egg price to Tk 990-1010 per 100 pieces. It was Tk 920-940 days ago.
Tejgaon-based egg trader Md Burhan said, "Farmers are supplying us at Tk 9.0-9.2 a piece which was Tk 8.5-8.8 a piece four days back."
He said no farm could sell egg below Tk 9.5 a piece amid the skyrocketing cost of chicken feed.
Mr Burhan said feed prices rose by 60-65 per cent in last one year while load-shedding has caused a decline in egg production by 30 per cent.
Diesel price hike also caused a surge in the egg-carrying costs notably, he mentioned.
However, farm egg retail price hit an all-time high of Tk 160-180 a dozen on August 14-16 mainly due to higher production costs, load-shedding and an active racket in Dhaka's market, according to a government agency.
The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) in the third week of August started a drive in Dhaka's key wholesale markets and other egg hubs across the country.
The drive helped cool down the price within a few days.
Meanwhile, sugar and ginger became pricier further in the retail market.
Ginger of both imported and local varieties sold at Tk 120-160 a kg while loose sugar retailed at Tk 90-95 a kg on Saturday.
