Farm egg prices hike again to Tk 150 per dozen

Egg prices witnessed a hike again by Tk 10 per dozen on Thursday, intensifying the sufferings of the commoners.

A dozen brown farm eggs retailed at Tk 142-150 on the day until evening which was Tk 130-140 on Wednesday, according to groceries.

The price of the essential showed a hike of a total of Tk 20-25 per dozen in the last seven days.

According to the kitchen market sources, duck egg, Sonali and Pakistani chicken eggs remained static at previous highs of Tk 180-200 a dozen while indigenous chicken eggs at Tk 215-220.

Juel Rana, a grocer at West Dhanmondi, said wholesalers were charging Tk 1,140-1,150 for hundred brown eggs from Wednesday evening which was Tk 1,020 four days back.

He said the price was Tk 940-950 one and a half weeks ago.

However, farm eggs’ retail price hit an all-time high of Tk 160-180 a dozen on August 14-16 mainly due to higher production costs, load-shedding and an active racket in Dhaka’s market, according to a government agency.

In the third week of August, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) started a drive in Dhaka’s key wholesale markets and other egg hubs across the country.

The drive helped to cool down the prices within a few days. After remaining almost static for two and a half weeks, the cost of the essentials started rocketing again.

The state-run Department of Livestock Services (DLS) claims Bangladesh produces 22 to 23 billion pieces of eggs annually to meet the demand.
