Rights group on Wednesday called on the government for enacting a farmer friendly ‘Agricultural Land Protection Act’ to protect the country's croplands from grabbing and unplanned industrialisation.
Experts at a round table discussion at the National Press Club in Dhaka city said the law should be prepared taking recommendations from rights group and NGOs working on farmers' rights.
Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD) organised the event and placed some recommendations for inclusion as the government recently moved to introduce such act to protect arable lands from the land-grabbers.
With the government initiative of offering special economic zones for large businesses, participants also urged the authorities concerned to help farmers with special opportunities as part of the country’s marginal population.
Khushi Kabir, the chairperson of ALRD, presided over the round table discussion while Journalist Abu Sayeed Khan of Daily Samakal and economist Prof MM Akash, among others, spoke at the event.
