Eight firms asked to immediately submit progress report on wet-blue leather export

The government has asked the exporters concerned to provide the progress report on the export of wet-blue leather on an urgent basis.

The commerce ministry recently instructed eight companies involved in this trade to submit the latest export information, said officials.

Earlier, in July, the ministry allowed the companies to export such leather.

It then asked the exporter firms to provide the latest information in August last, but the organisations failed to provide the data.

The export of the leather, however, is allowed conditional and remains effective until June 30, 2022.

The ban on the export of wet-blue leather has been effective since 1990.

The eight companies have been allowed to export a total of 16-million square feet (sqft) of the item to buoy up the local rawhide market.

Each of the firms will be able to ship 2.0 million sq ft of the item.

The tanners are supposed to export leather to China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Italy, Spain, Germany, etc, said an official.
