The commerce ministry on Tuesday served a show-cause notice on E-Orange as to why legal action should not be taken against it in order to protect the interest of consumers.
The e-commerce platform has been given one week to explain its position.
The ministry sent the notice to Sonia Mehjabin and her husband Masukur Rahman, the owners of E-Orange, asking them to reply within the deadline.
The ministry has instructed the online platform to provide the volume of assets, liabilities and working capital until July 31, 2021 since the start of its business to the consumers and merchants concerned.
The ministry has sought information about the number of customers who have not received ordered products despite making payment and the volume of money taken from the customers concerned until July 31.
The E-Orange has been asked to provide the volume of arrears to the suppliers, had there been any.
The show-cause notice is issued for taking legal actions following complaints of harassment from consumers and for alleged gross irregularities while dealing with customers, according to a senior ministry official.
The official, however, said the authorities concerned would take legal actions, if the platform fails to reply to the notice with the given time.
Meanwhile, a customer named Taherul Islam filed a case with the Gulshan police station on Tuesday, alleging embezzlement of Tk 11.00 billon.
Following the case, Sonia Mehjabin and her husband Masukur Rahman surrendered to the court Tuesday and sought bail, but the court sent them to jail denying bail.
