e-GP helps save US$600m per year, says IMED Secretary

The government-introduced e-GP (electronic-government procurement) system saves some US$600 million per year due to hassle-free procurement, IMED Secretary Abu Hena Murshed Zaman said on Thursday.

Referring to a World Bank report, the IMED secretary told journalists that e-GP also helped save 0.15 million tonnes of carbon emission due to reduction in physical movement of the parties involved in the public procurement.

The IMED's outgoing secretary was briefing journalists at the Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) office in the city.

He said all the procurements, even the smallest ones, would be brought under the e-GP system shortly for ensuring the higher transparency of public expenditure and accountability.

"Currently 30 government agencies have been brought under the e-GP system. All others will also come under the  network," Mr Zaman said.

CPTU Director General Mohammed Shoheler Rahman Chowdhury said they were trying to ensure transparency in the public procurement system in Bangladesh through the e-GP.

The e-GP sytem recently developed the online auditing system which would ensure accountability of public agencies in the public fund expenditure, he added.

Mr Chowdhury said the e-GP system helped earn Tk 19.61 billion until December this year. The amount has been deposited with the public exchequer.
