Dhaka Mass Transit Company (DMTC) signed a contract with a consortium of Japanese-Indian companies on Sunday to provide necessary support for the electrical and mechanical system development of Dhaka metro rail project.
With this contract, the state-owned metro rail company has completed all contracs it needs for implementing the project.
The DMTC is constructing a 20.1 kilometre metro rail, known as Mass Rapid Transit Line-6 (MRT 6) dividing works into eight packages.
The latest contract E and M system, which is package number 7, will develop railway track, signalling system, electrification work, lifts and escalators at stations and depots, platform automated doors, automated ticketing systems and counters etc. for smooth, secured and efficient operation of the metro rail.
The consortium, comprising of Marubeni of Japan, and Larsen and Toubro (L & T) of India, has won the work against Tk 49.30 billion.
DMTC Managing Director MAN Siddique and L & T’s Railway Business Group Chief Executive Officer Rajeev Jyoti signed the contract on behalf of the respective sides.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader witnessed the ceremony at Bangabandhu Convention Centre.
Indian High Commissioner, Japanese Ambassador, JICA chief representative, among others, were present.
The DMTC is having the MRT-6 developed as the first metro rail under Strategic Transport plan with financial technical support of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Some 60,000 people will be able to commute between Uttara and Motijheel per hour once the elevated MRT with 16 stations is developed.
