Dhaka's Fu-Wang Club sued for alleged tax evasion

Dhaka's Fu-Wang Club has been charged with VAT evasion of more than Tk 410 million.

A VAT intelligence team detected the dodge and sued Fu-Wang Bowling and Services Ltd that offers bar, pool, billiard and food services to hundreds of clients a day.

The VAT Audit, Intellige-nce and Investigation Dir-ectorate of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

The VAT intelligence was also requested to probe further to find irregularities like money laundering by the bar located on Gulshan-Tejgaon Link Road.

They did the investigation from July 2015 to June 2020.

A three-member team, led by VAT intelligence deputy director Ferdousi Mahbub, conducted the scrutiny.

Earlier, the authorities summoned club owners to defend themselves and present necessary documents several times, but they did not do so, the statement said.

Fu-Wang Club evaded Tk 237 million in taxes and 2.0-per cent interest on the amount accumulated to Tk 173 million, totalling Tk 410 million.

The NBR central intelligence cell was also requested to scrutinise if the club conducted other tax-related offences.
