DCCI starts preparing concept paper

A leading trade body of the country has stepped up its efforts to grab a big share of the global halal products market.

Keeping this in view, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) started preparing a concept paper for exporting more halal products.

"We have started the process for preparing a 'concept paper' for exporting more halal products from the country," DCCI president Abul Kasem Khan told the FE.

Bangladesh exports a small amount of halal foods or products.

But it has the potential to raise the volume of halal products' export.

The demand for halal products has been increasing day by day due to its wider acceptability among the consumers.

There are about 1.5 billion Muslim people in the world who prefer to consume halal foods.

Apart from Muslims, non-Muslims also prefer to consume halal products considering health benefits.

The demand for halal products will rise to US$ 3.0 trillion in 2021 which was about $ 1.9 trillion in 2015, according to the state of Global Islamic Economy Report 2016-2017.

The DCCI president said if the country's entrepreneurs could export more halal products, then it will help the country to earn more foreign currencies.

He said DCCI held a seminar last month in the capital where a delegation from Dubai of the United Arab Emirates took part.

Marketing Manager of RACS Quality Certificates Issuing Services Ossama Emam discussed the possibility of exporting more halal products from Bangladesh to different countries especially the Middle East region.

In the meeting, Mr Emam opined that Bangladesh needs to address some issues for exporting more halal products to other countries across the world.

Mr Khan said it will take around one month to prepare the draft of their concept paper for exporting more halal foods or products.

"We will send our concept paper to the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) for consideration upon its completion," he said.

He said they have been communicating with Dubai-based RACS for exporting more halal products.
