Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan has said work on building the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar-Ghundum rail line is now going on and it will be connected with the Trans-Asian Railway Network.
The rail line will connect with neighbouring Myanmar via Ghundum and it will eventually be expanded up to China, Malaysia and Thailand as part of the Trans-Asian Railway Network, he elaborated on Sunday.
The minister spoke at a view exchange meeting with senior government officials of different organisations and the Bangladesh Railway (East Zone) at the conference room at the CRB railway head office in Chattogram.
Nurul Islam said the Prime Minister has a plan to revive the past glory of the railway through implementation of different development projects by 2030.
These projects will help upgrade the railway network, he added.
Besides, high-speed train between Chattogram and Dhaka will be introduced under a project. Once the project is implemented, passengers can travel between the two cities in 57 minutes, said the minister.
"We are working to bring dynamism in the railway. We have only one plan - expanding the railway network to every district of the country," he said.
He also said a separate rail line will also be constructed from Dhaka to Chattogram via Narayanganj, Cumilla and Feni, which will facilitate smooth train journey between the two major cities.
He disclosed that another project will be undertaken to install rail line connecting Agartala in Tripura, an Indian state, with Bangladesh via Akhaura.
He said railway communication between Bangladesh and India was snapped after the India-Pakistan war in 1965. That railway route will be revived.
The minster asked the government officials to work sincerely and honestly to implement the major projects of the government.
