Prices of sugar, layer chicken, egg, and Pakistani and Sonali chicken saw a hike in Dhaka city’s kitchen markets at the weekend.
Apart from these, prices of green chili per kg also went up by Tk 10 compared to last Friday.
All other essential food items remained stable maintaining the previous hike.
Vegetable traders, vendors, and consumers said all kinds of vegetables maintained the same prices both at wholesale and retail levels.
The state-run Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) in its daily report on Friday stated that eggs were being sold at Tk 35-Tk 37 (four pieces), soybean oil at Tk 160-Tk 162 per litre, and broiler chicken at 150-Tk 155 the retail level.
The price of green chili per kg was between Tk 49-Tk 57, the DAM added.
Broiler chicken was selling at Tk 145 per kg at wholesale price on Friday whereas the price was Tk 155 per kg last week, Rasel (single name), a salesman at New Bismillah Broiler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, told The FE.
Pakistani and Sonali chicken were selling at Tk 300 per kg at the retail level today whereas it was Tk 270 last week, he said.
Layer chicken price increased by Tk 5.0 from Tk 230 to Tk 235 at the wholesale level, he said.
The price of the red egg was Tk 115 a dozen at the wholesale level today which was Tk 105 in the previous week, he added.
Jubayer Hossain, a wholesaler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, told The Financial Express (FE) that sugar (imported) was selling at Tk 74 per kg today at the wholesale level, while it was Tk 71 per kg last week.
All the essentials including toiletries stand static maintaining the previous hike, he said.
Without citing any specific reason, Jubayer Hossain also said the market has been very volatile recently.
Akash (single name), a vendor at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, said the newly-harvested onions were selling at Tk 45 per kg at the wholesale level today whereas the price was the same last week.
Imported ginger was selling at Tk 60-Tk 65 a kg at the wholesale level, he added.
This correspondent saw that prices of brinjals, pumpkins, bitter gourd, pointed gourd, newly harvested potatoes, and green chilli remained steady today compared to last week's prices.
A vegetable vendor, Faruk (single name), claimed that the price of green chili per kg increased by Tk 10 this week from Tk 60 to Tk 70.
