Citizens’ Tax Tribunal 2018’ on Nov 20

ActionAid Bangladesh is going to organise a ‘Citizens’ Tax Tribunal 2018’ on November 20 at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium, University of Dhaka.

The objective of this event is to bring attention of government and other stakeholders to ensure progressive tax system that reduces the burden on the poor.

Fazle Hossain Badsha, Member of Parliament, M M Akash, Professor, Economics, Dhaka University Dr. Md Abdul Mazid, Former Chairperson, NBR and Dr. Kazi Maruful Islam, Professor, Development Studies, Dhaka University will address the event.

Farah Kabir, Country Director, ActionAid Bangladesh will moderate.

The tribunal will have three key groups- namely the panel of jury, plaintiff and amicus curiae. This citizens’ tribunal will be a platform for stakeholders to express their grievances about the burden of VAT, corporate tax avoidance and its impact on select groups and society at large. Six cases will be presented- VAT Burden and Tax Avoidance- in two sessions.

Representatives from different professions including Govt. officials, businesspersons, corporates, researchers, political leaders, garment workers, students will join the event. Moreover, around 400 people from eight divisions will participate.
