Chinese Ambassador Zhang Zuo has said a number of Chinese companies are eager to invest in different sectors in Bangladesh, including fisheries, agro-processing, footwear, processed food and ready-made garment.
"A Chinese company has recently shown its interest to invest in the steel sector in Bangladesh," he said during a meeting with Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the capital on Wednesday.
The Chinese ambassador met the planning minister at the latter's office, the ministry's information officer Gazi Towhidul Islam said.
Mr Kamal urged China to invest more in Bangladesh, especially in the marine sector.
"There are ample opportunities for investment in marine fisheries and maritime technology sectors," the minister said.
Mr Kamal said the blue economy is a vast area, where China can invest and explore the natural resources, including fisheries and minerals.
The minister asked the ambassador to facilitate more investment in the special economic zones (SEZs) in Bangladesh.
They also discussed economic and development issues including foreign direct investment (FDI), project financing and trade.
In another programme, Mr Kamal said South and South-East Asia can march together towards economic development.
He urged the ASEAN countries to invest more in Bangladesh, the gateway of South Asia.
The minister said this at "hoist the flag" programme at the Indonesian Embassy in the capital on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of ASEAN.
