The prices of green chilli abruptly jumped by Tk 60-80 per kg at different kitchen markets in the capital on Friday.
A kg of green chilli was sold between Tk 180 and Tk 200 on the day, which was Tk 120 a kg during last week.
Visiting different kitchen markets at Karwanbazar, Rampura, Malibag, Shantingar and Jatrabari the FE correspondent found that customers had to pay extra money for purchasing the necessary item.
If a customer wants to purchase 250 gram of green chilli, he has to pay Tk 50 on the day, which was Tk 25-30 a few days ago.
Retailers at the kitchen markets blamed wholesalers for artificially raising the prices of green chilli. But the wholesalers at Karwan Bazar told the FE that the prices have soared due to supply shortage.
"The prices of various essential commodities are gradually increasing one after another. But it seems that there is none to oversee it. We, the limited income group of people, are ultimately hit hard by this price hike," Md Jamil, a private sector service holder, told the FE at Shantinagar kitchen market on the day.
