Chicken, ginger get pricier in city kitchen markets

Prices of chicken and ginger increased further while those of some fishes declined in the city kitchen markets last week.

Prices of some vegetables including pointed gourd and sponge gourd declined. But prices of some vegetables including long bean and brinjal went up.

Broiler chicken sold at Tk 130-Tk 140 and layer at Tk 160-Tk 165 per kilogram on Thursday---a Tk 10 hike in a week.

Pakistani variety was sold at Tk 250-Tk 270 while indigenous chicken at Tk 380-Tk 400 a kg--- up by Tk 20-Tk 30.

Abdur Rauf, a vendor at Rayer Bazar in the city, told the FE that prices of chicken started increasing amid rising demand.

He pointed out that chicken prices declined notably during and after Eid-ul-Azha vacation as most of city dwellers left the capital city.

He said broiler sold at Tk 115-Tk 120 a kg just after Eid.

But the price was increasing and it might show a further hike in the coming days as stock of preserved meat of sacrificial animals started running out, he added.

The price of ginger increased by Tk 10 a kg and sold at Tk 150-Tk 170 at retails last week.

However, ginger was sold at Tk 105-Tk 125 a kg at Shyambazar, Karwan Bazar and Beribadh wholesales-- Tk 10 hike in a week.

According to state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, ginger price increased by 15 per cent in last two weeks and the current retail price was 32 per cent higher than that of a year ago.

Shyambazar-based spice importer Narayan Chandra Saha told the FE that ginger prices increased as import of Indian and Burmese ginger had totally been stopped.

He said flood and heavy rain caused severe crop loss in the two countries.

But the price gap between wholesales and retails was much higher, causing sufferings to the consumers, he added.

He said they were selling Chinese ginger at Tk 105-Tk 110 a kg which was retailing at Tk 160-170 a kg.

Prices of some vegetables including pointed gourd, sponge gourd and ridge gourd declined by Tk 10 a kg and sold between Tk 35 and Tk 50 a kg.

But prices of some vegetables such as long bean, brinjal and bitter gourd increased by Tk 5-Tk 10 a kg and sold at Tk 50-Tk 70.

Meanwhile, prices of Hilsa and other indigenous fish showed a decline by 10-15 per cent.

Hilsa was sold at Tk 550-Tk 1,200 a kg on Thursday based on the size--- a 15 per cent decline in a week.
