The consumers in the Chattogram region get 300mmcfd of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Monday.

Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd (KGDCL) is supplying gas to local industries, gas-based power plants, fertiliser units and domestic consumers.

KGDCL officials said the Gas Transmission Co Ltd (GTCL) today increased the LNG supply to 300 mmcfd from its previous 100 mmcfd since August 18.

Businesses in Chattogram see the increasing gas supply as a boon for them and hoped the required gas supply to the region will continue.

KGDCL sources said Chattogram supply line received gas from the central generating station (CGS) built at Rangadia of Anwara on the river's south bank.

Raozan 420 megawatt (MW) Power Plant, Shikalbaha 60MW Power Plant, Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Ltd and Kafco Fertilier Plant are lying idle for months for gas crisis.

The consumers were set to get the first regasified gas supply from May.

But technical issues, rough sea and the delay in pipeline construction left the country's first LNG cargo stranded off the Chattogram coast.

KGDC sources said the second ship with 138,000 cubic metres of LNG arrived from Qatar for the LNG import facility in the Bay of Bengal off Moheshkhali Island.

The first consignment of 136,900 cubic meter of LNG was brought by MT Excellence, they added.

Chattogram region had been suffering from acute gas shortages for the past several years.

The authorities suspended supply to the region on grounds of a drastic fall in production at Sangu Gas Field.

Domestic, industrial and commercial consumers and businesses here alleged that the gas transmission authorities only deprived Chattogram of gas supply from the national grid.

The demand for gas in Chattogram ranges between 480 and 500 mmcfd.

The region has 5,80,000 consumers, including 1,500 industrial units, 70 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, 5,75,000 domestic users and 4,092 others.
