CCCI seeks more British investment in Bangladesh

British Prime Minister's Trade Envoy Rushanara Ali MP met with president of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Mahbubul Alam at the CCCI office in Chattogram city on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the CCCI president sought British cooperation in the project of high-speed train on Dhaka-Chattogram route, in ensuring speedy container handling services in Chittagong Port and in the construction of the Bay Terminal.

He said many countries, including Japan and India, are setting up industries in the Mirsarai Economic Zone by using one-stop service facility.

The British government can also avail of these facilities and increase their investment in Bangladesh, he added.

Bangladesh has a comparatively cheap labour force, he said and called on the British investors to invest in their suitable sectors in Bangladesh.

Rushanara Ali gave a brief description of different activities of her government undertaken for the development of Bangladesh, especially in the areas of poverty alleviation, education, health and generation of skilled manpower.

The UK has also been providing financial support to Bangladesh through the World Bank, she said.

Bangladesh can gain a lot by properly using these supports for the desired development, she added.

She also said Bangladeshi universities can also strengthen the joint programmes with the universities of Scotland and England.

Former CCCI president Ali Ahmed, CCCI director Omar Hazzaz, Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice president Dr Munal Mahbub and British Deputy High Commissioner Canber Hussain Bar were present at the meeting.
