Carrefour eyes business expansion in Bangladesh

French retailer Carrefour looks to expand its business base in Bangladesh through strengthening partnership with local garment suppliers.

The willingness was expressed when Carrefour director for textile global sourcing Jean Marie Fouque made a courtesy call on BGMEA President Faruque Hassan at the trade body's complex at Uttara in the city on Monday, according to a statement.

During the meeting, they discussed a number of issues including different RMG trade-related aspects like challenges and opportunities of Bangladesh's RMG industry.

Carrefour is a French multinational retail and wholesaling corporation headquartered in Massy, France.

They talked about how Carrefour could strengthen its partnership with Bangladeshi suppliers to expand business base here while prospects of increasing apparel sourcing from the country also got importance, it added.

They also discussed possible collaboration between Carrefour and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to support the Centre of Innovation Efficiency and OSH.

BGMEA has established the center to support local RMG industry with knowledge, skills and technical know-how to face the future challenges and enhance its competitiveness.

Mr Hassan invited Jean Marie Fouque to attend the mega event "Made in Bangladesh Week" scheduled to begin on November 12 to showcase prospects and strengths of the local export-oriented RMG industry.

Rezwan Murshed, Country Head (Bangladesh and Pakistan), Veronique Grevet, CSR Manager, Global Sourcing Carrefour, Dhaka office and Nasir Uddin Tipu, Manager, Production and Quality, were also present at the meeting.
