Leaders of Bangladesh Local Carton Manufacturers Association (BLCMA) called on the government to contain the price of packaging papers, voicing their concern over its recent unusual hike.
A syndicate of paper mills owners raised the price, putting the industry at stake, they said at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital on Thursday.
They sought government intervention in reining in the price hike.
MA Baher Patwary, president of BLCMA, and Rafiul Islam, secretary of BLCMA, among others, were present at the press conference.
They said the price of the papers has increased at least 30 to 35 per cent per kg. It is completely unexpected, unacceptable and illogical.
The activities in the industry would come to a halt if the government does not take steps immediately to check the price rise, the BLCMA leaders feared.
At present 2000 packaging factories are running their business, with at least 10000 people directly involved in this sector across the country.
