CAB for transparency in gas sector, giving BERC full power to fix price

The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) put forward a set of recommendations on Wednesday for development of the country's gas sector that include ensuring transparency and people's ownership of natural resource.

They also suggested formulating a proper distribution and design plan of Titas Gas, by identifying the existing loopholes and carrying out a study, which will be implemented after approval by the regulator concerned.

CAB made the recommendations at a press briefing titled "Irrational proposal for gas price hike and reality" at its office in the capital's Segunbaghica area.

It also suggested giving authority of supervising the Gas Development Fund and the Energy Security Fund to the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) instead of the Energy Division.

CAB also proposed to give BERC the full authority to fix gas price.

President of CAB Golam Rahman demanded exemplary punishment to those responsible for the recent Barapukuria coal scam.

CAB vice-president S M Nazer Hossain, general secretary Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, and its energy adviser Dr M Shamsul Alam, were present, among others.
