BTRC amends international gateway guidelines

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has amended the guidelines for the International Gateway (IGW).

According to the new guidelines, IGW licensees will be able to exchange calls through the TDM (time division multiplexing) interface as well as the IP (internet protocol) interface.

BTRC's Legal and Licensing published a notification in this connection on Wednesday.

According to BTRC sources, IGW and ICX licencees use TDM-based call technology. Mobile operators can now send calls to their networks with IP instead of TDM with the advent of 4G.

The guidelines are amended so that IGW and ICX licensees could cope up with updated technology.

A BTRC official said the use of equipment by IGW or ICX operators has changed with updated technologies.

Currently, TDM-based equipment is difficult to find but IP-based equipment is cheaper and available.

The amended guidelines also included changes in signalling or protocol, connectivity and space coding.

TDM is a circuit switched technology where end-to-end (e2e) connection is already made, either prior to connection request as in the leased lines or e2e connection is established on request as in the existing PSTN telephone networks.

In both these situations, the content/payload, which is being transferred between the two ends, is sent across as circuit switched data and the identity of the two ends was used at the time of establishing the connection.

On the other hand, in the IP networks, there is no e2e connection, but the incoming packets/payload is recognised based on the identity, which is called 'Call IP'.

Each payload has the IP which tells where this payload is coming from and what the destination IP is.
