A faction of the garments sector’s apex trade body has opposed the latest tenure extension of its board of directors.
Earlier on Monday, the Commerce Ministry extended the tenure of the current office bearers of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) by one year bypassing the trade body’s election that was supposed to be held on March 7.
This is the second time the government has extended the tenure of the existing BGMEA board since its current tenure expired on September 21 last year.
Terming the latest tenure extension illegitimate, the faction under the banner of Shadhinata Parishad voiced the opposition at a press conference at a hotel in Dhaka city’s Karwan Bazar on Saturday.
They also urged the government to take prompt steps to arrange for the election to pick new leadership for the elite trade body.
There are two more factions of BGMEA—Sammilita Parishad and Forum— of which Sammilita Parishad was selected for the 2015-2017 tenure.
