The apparel sector’s apex body - BGMEA - has threatened to shut all the garment factories for an indefinite period unless the agitating workers join their respective workplaces from tomorrow (Monday).

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Md Siddiqur Rahman made the threat at a press briefing held at its headquarters in Dhaka city on Sunday.

"If you (workers) do not work, you will get no wages. No work, no pay," he said, adding: "And factories will remain closed in line with the labour law provision of 13 (1) for an indefinite period."

The government-formed committee will give their decision regarding basic pays under grades three to five at today's (Sunday) meeting scheduled to be held at the Labour Ministry at 3.00pm, he said.

The BGMEA president urged the protesting workers to go back to their factories and join the production work.
