BGMEA seeks smooth power supply to fully export-oriented factories

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged the government to ensure uninterrupted power supply to fully export-oriented factories.

The apex body of the apparel makers has said the energy crisis should be resolved for RMG factories with a view to creating new employment and achieving the export target of $100 billion by 2030.

The association has made the call in a recent letter, signed by BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, sent to Prime Minister's Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Affairs Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury.

In the letter, BGMEA president referred to a meeting, presided over by the adviser, held on September 12, 2022 at the Prime Minister's Office, where ways to overcome the energy crisis were discussed broadly.

He also mentioned that the RMG factories had also been following the government order of area-wise staggered holidays to save energy after issuance of a circular on August 11, 2022.

However, most of the industrial units have been facing an energy crisis due to low pressure and irregular supply of gas, especially during day time.

Due to the reason, lead time of export has been increased as well as many of the workers remain idle at factory premises for power shortage, he added.
