Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has been awarded the 2021 USGBC Leadership Award by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for leading the way to reduce the environmental costs of production in the country’s apparel industry.
The USGBC has recently announced its 2021 USGBC Leadership Award recipients in India and Southeast Asia for contributions to sustainable, healthy, equitable and resilient buildings and communities.
The BGMEA is the only trade body in the global apparel industry that received the award, said its president Faruque Hassan at a virtual press conference held Saturday.
Nine out of world's top 10 green garment factories and 39 out of the globe’s top 100 green industrial projects are in Bangladesh, he said.
BGMEA president said 500 more factories are in the process of getting LEED certification, explaining the measures the trade body has taken to promote LEED certification that included policy advocacy to the government for reduced rate of corporate tax, green financing and technology up-gradation fund and others.
