BGMEA demands essential commodities at lower prices for garment workers

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Tuesday urged the government for selling essential goods to the garment workers at lower prices for their relief from the skyrocketing prices of some basic commodities.

During a meeting with the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) chairman, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan demanded the arrangement of 40 trucks in garment industrial zones for selling essential commodities.

The BGMEA also sent a letter to the commerce ministry for selling the goods to the workers at affordable prices, Faruque Hassan said while addressing a press conference held at a city hotel.

However, Hassan did not tell in detail about the sales of goods to the workers.

The BGMEA president also talked about different issues of the garment industry, including his recent visit to the United States and European Union.

He also said that they are receiving higher prices from the sales of garment items from the international retailers and brands but prices have not increased in line with the high prices of raw materials and other logistics costs.

“But the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has been affecting the export of goods to Russia and Ukraine in the time of business recovery from the severe fallouts due to the Covid-19,” he said.

“The BGMEA has been lobbying with the influential bodies in Europe and USA, the two main export destinations of the country so that the export grows in near future,” he informed.
