Country's apparel makers have demanded withdrawal of the decision of gas rationing in the industrial units for four hours a day for fifteen days.
In a statement, first vice president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Syed Nazrul Islam on Tuesday said the export-oriented industry will incur huge loss due to the decision of gas supply suspension.
He said the country's apparel industry has huge export orders that include the orders suspended or cancelled during the Covid-19 pandemic and the new ones.
These orders have to be shipped in a stipulated timeframe; and that is why all factories are passing busy time to produce them before the Eid-ul-Fitr, he said.
The gas supply suspension for four hours a day at this moment will disrupt production in various industrial sectors and export will be hampered, added Mr Islam.
He pointed out that due to the disruption, the factories may face problems in making payment of salary and wages before and after the Eid which may lead to labour unrest.
The step may also come as a big barrier for the apparel industry in making recovery from the pandemic-induced business recession, he added.
