BEZA, Chinese firms to set up water treatment plant at Bangabandhu Shilpa Nagar

A water treatment plant with capacity of 50 million litres per day (MLD) will be established at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN) to provide the industrial units with safe water.

To this effect, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) signed an agreement with a Chinese joint venture- ZHEC-BOW-SMEDRIC JV- comprising three organisations on Tuesday.

Project director of the water treatment plant (WTP) project Md Helal Ahmed and chief engineer of the JV Zhang Lilei signed the deal on behalf of their respective sides at a ceremony at the BEZA headquarters in the city's Agargaon.

BEZA Executive Chairman Shaikh Yusuf Harun presided over the function.

The Institute of Water Modelling will act as consultant organisation for BEZA.

The project's tenure is 30 months and the value of the deal is Tk4.39 billion.

Country's first planned industrial city BSMSN is being established on 33,000 acres of land across Chattogram's Mirsarai and Sitakund and Feni's Sonagazi upazila.

Shaikh Yusuf Harun said BEZA has taken different initiatives to ensure smooth water supply for the investors.

The chairman also said BEZA will gradually increase its capacity to use surface water though initially it is using groundwater.

"The agreement today is being signed to install 50 MLD-capacity WTP as part of the BEZA's plan to increase use of surface water," he said. A feasibility study to use surface water from Meghna-Dakatia estuary near Chandpur to use it in the BSMSN through pipeline has already been completed by the Department of Public Health Engineering.
