BD taking steps to face post-LDC challenges

Bangladesh is taking preparations to face the challenges, especially to overcome the possible trade barriers, in the post-LDC (least developed country) era, said Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Sharifa Khan on Thursday.

She also said there could be some challenges in foreign trade, but Bangladesh would take every preparation to keep its global trade in a comfortable zone.

Ms Khan was speaking as the chief guest at a workshop - "Effective engagement of the media for sustainable graduation" - organised by the ERD.

Presided over by ERD Additional Secretary Farid Aziz, some 40 journalists from the Development Journalists Forum of Bangladesh (DJFB) took part at the consultation meeting. The ERD secretary further said, "We need good research on the challenges to foreign trade, loss of preferential trade benefits and recovery strategy, and TRIPS benefit for the phrama and other sectors."

So, the ERD is working to find out the needs and demands of the country's business sector along with the possible way out for recovery, she added.

In 2021, Bangladesh was recommended for graduation from its current position of LDC to a developing nation.

The graduation is likely to be confirmed in 2024, when the UN would announce the country's final position to become a developing nation. From 2026, Bangladesh is likely to become a developing nation.
