BD mulls rice purchase from India scrapping Thailand deal

Bangladesh will scrap a plan to import 150,000 tonnes of rice from Thailand as the latter is delaying finalisation of the deal.

The South Asian nation's head of the state grains buyer came up with the disclosure on Thursday.

Director general of Bangladesh's Directorate General of Food Badrul Hasan said, "They have been taking too much time to finalise the deal. There is no point to wait for them when we are getting supplies from other sources, including India, at cheaper rates."

It was agreed earlier in October that the grain from the Southeast Asian nation would be imported at $465 a tonne.

According to Reuters, Bangladesh traditionally being the world's fourth-biggest rice producer emerged as a major importer of the grain in 2017 after floods damaged crops and sent domestic prices to skyrocketing highs.
