The government has planned to turn Bangladesh into a regional automobile manufacturing hub by 2030, said Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Thursday.
"The export competitiveness of locally manufactured automobiles has been increasing. The automobile sector will help the country achieve the sustainable development goals by 2030 and make it a developed one by 2041," he said.
The minister made the remarks while inaugurating the manufacturing of international standard air-conditioned and commercial bus bodies and truck cabins by Ifad Group at its industrial park at Dhamrai upazila in Dhaka.
The government is putting emphasis on the development of the country's automobile sector, he said, calling upon the private sector to come forward to this end.
The minister assured the Ifad Group of providing cooperation from the government on its journey to manufacture automobiles.
Ifad Group will make bodies of 1,000 air-conditioned and non A/C buses annually.
Chairman of Ifad Group Iftekhar Ahmed Tipu presided over the event.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Enamul Rahman, lawmaker Benazir Ahmed, and Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission chairman Munshi Shahabuddin Ahmed were present as special guests.
