The government has taken initiatives to make the country's agriculture sector profitable by modernising and commercialising it, said agriculture minister Dr Mohammad Abdur Razzaque in the capital on Wednesday.

"We're working to modernise and commercialise our agriculture sector to make it profitable," he said while launching a book styled 'Farm Sector of Bangladesh: Prospects and Challenge' in the BARC conference room at Farmgate.

The Forum for Information Dissemination on Agriculture (FIDA) and Syngenta Bangladesh Ltd co-hosted the event.

Mr Razzaque said the country has witnessed record-highest rice production due to time-befitting measures taken by the government.

Despite this, there are no actual statistics of population and demand for rice, although the rate of rice production has increased significantly as per-decimal land now produces a maund of rice.

The minister said the non-human consumption of rice has also increased due to the increased demand for rice in fisheries, poultry and other sectors.

FIDA president Reaz Ahmed chaired the event which was also attended by Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation chairman Dr Amitab Sarcar, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) director general Nazirul Islam and DAE director Monirul Alam.
