Bangladesh eyes electricity from China thru’ Myanmar

Bangladesh is planning to import gas and power from China through Myanmar.

This willingness was expressed by Bangladeshi State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid when he visited Myanmar last month

He also said Bangladesh is interested to build a grid line with Myanmar, according a report by Xinhua.

He said if Bangladesh and Myanmar can build a grid line between them, it will pave the way for exchanging electricity with China and ASEAN countries.

It will also help bolstering cooperation among the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectorial Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) and Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Forum for Regional Cooperation (BCIM) nations.

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB)has taken a massive capacity expansion plan to add about 11,600 MW generation capacity in next 5 years to achieve 24,000 MW capacity with the aim to provide quality and reliable electricity to all Bangladeshi people.

The total power generation capacity of the country now stands at 15,761 MW, according to an earlier FE report.

This was disclosed by Power Division Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus while he made a power-point presentation on the power sector last week.

He further informed that the number of power connection receivers increased to 25.9 million in July which was 10.8 million at the beginning of 2009.

The transmission lines rose to 10,436 kilometers while the distribution line to 4,01,000 kilometers.

The distribution system loss came down to 9.98 per cent from the previous 14.33 per cent, he said.

Meanwhile, Rural Electrification Board (REB) has set a target to bring all the 460 upazilas under 100 per cent electrification.
