Bangladesh Economics Summit begins today

The '1st Bangladesh Economics Summit 2018 (BES 2018)' begins at the Dhaka University (DU) premises in the capital today (Friday), aimed at promoting research and business thinking among students.

The Economics Study Centre (ESC), a pioneer student body of the Department of Economics of the DU, is all set to organize the three-day event on October 26-27 and November 01, according to a statement issued here on Thursday.

The inaugural ceremony will be held in Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, Social Science Building, at 10.00 am today.

Professor M M Akash is currently the moderator of the ESC, established in 1973. Professor Shafique uz Zaman, Chairperson, Department of Economics, is having the responsibility of the chief patron.

The BES 2018, the first of its kind, is a follow up of several programmes organised by the centre over the past few years to promote research and business thinking among students.

The ESC will also launch two of its recent publications in the inauguration ceremony: the first volume of "Bangladesh Students' Digest on Economics and Development" and the second volume of "Ceteris Paribus".

The paper presentation competition will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm on the same day at the Department of Economics.

The Summit will consist of segments such as research paper competition, essay writing competition, public lecture, panel discussion and policy debate. Both the research paper competition and essay writing competition are for undergraduate students.

The theme for research paper focuses on dynamics of economic inequality prevailing in Bangladesh. The theme for essay competition is the ever expanding gig economy and its future impacts.

The policy debate will focus on development paradox and its solutions. Prominent debaters and researchers in the field related to economics, business and development sector will take part in this debate.

The policy debate will be held on October 27 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Sirajul Islam Lecture Hall, University of Dhaka.

Renowned economists will enlighten youngsters about contemporary economic issues in the public lecture and panel discussion segments. These segments along with the closing ceremony will be held on November 01 from 2.30 pm to 7 pm at the TSC Auditorium.
