The government has hired one more deputy governor (DG) to ensure smooth functioning of the central bank in the Covid-19 situation, officials said.

Abu Farah Md. Naser, executive director of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) under post retirement leave (PRL) has been appointed as DG of the central bank on the condition of suspending his leave, according to a notification, issued by the Financial Institutions Division (FID) of Ministry of Finance on Sunday.

The contractual appointment will remain valid until Mr. Abu Farah reaches the age of 62 years. He will turn 62 on February 23, 2024.

Mr. Abu Farah is likely to take over as new DG after completing official formalities today (Monday), a BB senior official has told the FE.

With the new appointments, the number of deputy governors at the central bank is now four.

Earlier the central bank had three permanent DG posts. The fourth post was created on the condition that one deputy governor will be appointed from a scheduled bank.
