Sending SMS in Bangla from now will cost half of the price of English from February, 21.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will inaugurate the service on February 21 on the occasion of Mother Language Day 2021. The regulator has already sent a directive to the mobile phone operators in this regard.
Following the direction, a Bangla SMS will cost Tk 0.25-without VAT and taxes-while an English-language SMS will cost Tk 0.50.
Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar told The Financial Express that this was a permanent measure.
Earlier in 2019, the BTRC gave a similar direction which wasn't implemented at that time.
Mr Jabbar said now the direction is being implemented after one and a half years.
The aim behind this innovative act is to promote the mother language and motivate people more to chat in Bangla, says the letter issued by the BTRC to mobile operators.
