Average wage rate slightly up in March

The country’s average wage rate inched slightly in March of this year, according to the latest data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

It showed that the general wage rate index increased by 6.38 per cent in the month compared to that of past year. In February the index witnessed 6.31 per cent rise over the same month of the past year.

The wage rate index measures the movement of wages of low paid skilled and unskilled labour over time in the main sectors of the economy such as agriculture, industry and service.

Currently the index officially measures wage, which is compiled by simple weighted average of seven divisional wage rate indexes.

The average monthly wage rate of males and females particularly in 44 occupations makes up the average amount of the total daily wages.

The BBS data also showed that the wage rate index increased by 6.52 per cent in January this year, highest among the first nine months of this fiscal year.
