Around 34 per cent of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds of the country’s commercial banks were spent on education in the past fiscal year.
Central bank statistics, released on last week, unveiled the data which also showed that spending on disaster management was highest, around 46 per cent in FY18.
In the past fiscal year, banks spent some Tk 3.49 billion on the country’s education sector from their CSR funds.
At the same time, they spent Tk 4.83 billion to support the disaster management in the country.
The total spending on CSR activities stood at Tk 10.45 billion in the past fiscal year which was Tk 5.41 billion in FY17.
Thus, the annual spending on CSR by the banks increased by 52 per cent during the period under review.
Some 57 commercial banks are now operating in the country.
