Anwar Hossain was a Bangladesh business icon

Anwar Hossain, founding Chairman of business conglomerate Anwar Group of Industries, has passed away, leaving behind his legacy in the country.

He was one of the first generation industrialists who contributed to creating business opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship and attaining higher national growth. He became a business icon for the posterity.

Mr Anwar Hossain, also a former member of parliament from Dhaka's Lalbagh area, died of old-age complications at the city's Labaid Hospital on August 17 (Tuesday). He was 83.

His namaj-e-janaza will be held at Baitul Aman Jam-e-Masjid on road 7 in Dhanmondi at 10:30 am on Thursday, according to information provided by Anwar Group.

Mr Anwar Hossain earned a lot of fame among the commoners for his brand Mala Sharee. In 1968, he founded Anwar Silk unit to produce and market Mala Sharee, a household name in the subsequent decades.

The founder Chairman of Anwar Group of Industries, was also the founder Chairman of The City Bank Limited, Bangladesh Finance and Investment Company Ltd, and founder Director of City General Insurance Company Limited.

The long-serving Chairman of DCCI Foundation, he was a Director of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in 1976-78, 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1989-90.
