The government plans to take up hospital, school and housing projects for the welfare of expatriate Bangladeshis and their families.

Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam disclosed this on Thursday while inaugurating an ambulance service for the Bangladeshi migrants in the city.

Under the service, two ambulances will carry sick migrants and bodies of the dead workers from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to adjacent areas of Dhaka district.

The Wage Earners' Welfare Board (WEWB) has provided funds for the ambulances.

Expatriates can avail themselves of relevant services from the ambulances, the minister said.

He said the present government is working towards providing various services to Bangladeshi migrant workers.

Earlier, the WEWB provided an ambulance to Shah Amanat International Airport for the same purpose.

Expatriates' Welfare secretary Namita Halder, WEWB director general Gazi Mohammad Julhas, among others, were present at the programme.

At present, about 10 million Bangladeshis are working worldwide.

On an average, 3,500 dead bodies of migrant workers come home a year, according to official data.
