More than 90 per cent of the factories under the jurisdiction of the Industrial Police (IP) have paid festival allowances, according to IP officials.

Besides, more than 55 per cent of the units have paid 15 days' wages for the month of April, they said on Saturday evening.

A total of 9,176 units, including textile, ready-made garment, jute mills, factories under BEPZA and non-RMG units located in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Khulna, Sylhet and Cumilla are under IP jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Associated (BGMEA) in a statement claimed 100-per cent factories have given festival allowance and advance April wages as per a government decision.

Eid holidays have been granted for all the factories, BGMEA president Faruque Hassan said.

On April 11, state minister for labour Monnujan Sufian asked factory owners and the authorities of state-owned industries to pay allowances, wages and other dues to workers before the start of Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

She also instructed the owners to pay at least 15 days' wages of April to workers before Eid in case they fail to make the full month's payment.

Ms Sufian asked the factories to follow government holidays while announcing their own Eid holidays.

The BGMEA chief, however, thanked garment entrepreneurs for paying salary and Eid bonus to workers despite having many difficulties.

Citing media reports, he said, "As per the prime minister's directive, home minister and state minister for labour and employment, factory owners have staggered holidays zone-wise on different dates, resulting in less pressure of traffic on highways than previous occasions."

Eid holidays started at garment units last Wednesday to facilitate workers head for their village homes.

It is hoped that all garment workers will leave by today (Saturday), he said.

He thanked the government for managing work on development projects without interrupting traffic to ensure easy and safe travel of garment workers during Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

Mr Hassan thanked Bangladesh Bank for keeping banking services open on April 29 and 30.

The National Board of Revenue was also lauded for keeping custom houses open during holidays from April 29 to May 04 (except Eid day) to facilitate export-import activities.
