Commerce minister Tipu Munshi on Wednesday said the process of purchasing an estimated 500-megawatt power produced at a hydraulic plant in Nepal has been finalised.
He said this at a view-exchange meeting with Ghanshyam Bhandari, the Nepalese ambassador in Dhaka, at the former's secretariat office.
Senior officials of the ministry were also present during the meeting.
Currently, Bangladeshi products, including clothes, food items, paper and paper bonds, jute stuff, medicine, plastic goods and electronic consumables, are being exported to the Nepal market, said Mr Tipu.
There is huge potential to increase trade and business between the two neighbouring countries.
It is possible to enhance trade through increasing communications between businessmen of both states, creation of business facilities and exchange of visits, he observed.
Bangladesh's trade with Nepal is in a positive trend, although the trade volume between Bangladesh and Nepal is now less than $1.0 billion. In fiscal year 2021-22, Bangladesh exported goods worth $68 million to and imported goods worth $4.80 million from Nepal during the same period.
At the meet, Mr Bhandari said Bangladesh has made an offer to sign a preferential trade agreement (PTA) with Nepal. Kathmandu is working on the issue.
